Effective the end of March, the Oil Sands Community Alliance (OSCA) will be moving its head office to the Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM).

“As a member-driven organization committed to the local economy here in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, we are pleased to be supporting YMM,” said Karim Zariffa, Executive Director. “The Fort McMurray International Airport contributes significantly to both supplying and facilitating economic prosperity not only in this region but also throughout Alberta.”

YMM is an economic generator for Fort McMurray. That impact is reflected in the 760 direct full-time equivalent jobs associated with the airport, and the $46 million in direct wages.

“Our airport’s infrastructure and ability to handle workforce charters has provided us with the opportunity to build on our relationship with OSCA,” said RJ Steenstra, President and Chief Executive Officer for the Fort McMurray Airport Authority.

“We welcome this move onto our airport campus, as it will allow for more seamless operation out of YMM and add to the diverse range of businesses we have here at the airport,” Steenstra added. “The move will also help to further develop our relationship with OSCA and take advantage of mutually beneficial opportunities that will sustain and grow the airport and the community, today and well into the future.”

Activity at YMM has decreased since the 2016 wildfire and due to the economic downturn across the oil industry. OSCA and its members are committed to supporting YMM, especially at this critical time. Today, rotational workers and business travelers related to the oil sands industry represent roughly 40 percent or 296,000 of 740,000 of annual passenger trips through that airport.

“This office move not only gives OSCA increased visibility and advanced connectivity with Alberta and beyond, it’s also another positive step in our commitment to the Municipality and to the region,” said Zariffa.

The Oil Sands Community Alliance (OSCA) pursues innovative solutions to build thriving communities and enable the responsible growth of Canada’s oil sands. We use a collaborative approach to facilitate engagement among stakeholders including municipalities, government and industry. Collaboration builds relationships and creates opportunities for dialogue, information exchange and shared success.
